Pioneers first arrived here in 1815, establishing a permanent settlement shortly thereafter. Additional land was procured in 1859, and Craighead County was born. Jonesboro, named for State Senator William A. Jones, became the county seat. The Cotton Belt Railroad was the first to lay down tracks in Jonesboro, and before long, others like St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, Burlington Northern Railroad and Missouri Pacific Railroad followed suit. The 20th century commenced with a flurry of civic and industrial growth that continues to this day.
Jonesboro is treated to over 200 days of sunshine each year. Average high temperatures in July rise to 93 degrees, with January lows dipping to around 30. Annual rainfall is approximately 48 inches, and yearly snow accumulation is just over six inches.Jonesboro Public Schools have served the educational needs of our community for more than a century. Jonesboro is also the home of Arkansas State University, a beacon of academic and athletic excellence.
